Before the game starts, the person to the left of the dealer button must place a mandatory bet, called the small blind. Every player who sits at the table (maximum 10) is given this place once, indicating from which point the game starts.
Then the player immediately to the left of the starting place must also place a bet, called the big blind. This is double the small blind. Now there is money in the pot and the game can begin.
Each player is dealt 2 cards (hole cards) that cannot be seen by the other players at the table. Now you can bet where the players have the following options:
- Fold: discard the cards
- Call: go along with a bet from another player
- Raise: increase the bet
- Check: fit
- Bet: make a bet
After the betting round, the dealer places 3 cards face-up on the table, called the flop. These cards may be used by all players in combination with their own 2 cards. In the 2nd round of betting, the dealer discards a 4th card, the turn, and in the 3rd betting round, a further 5 card is dealt, the river.
The game, therefore, has a total of 4 betting rounds. The process whereby players open their cards and the winner becomes known is the showdown.
